2019 Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay
Pure, fragrant aromas of Gravenstein apple, citrus blossom and caramel dipped almonds frame this delicious wine as a classic Russian River Chardonnay. Ripe Bartlett pear, fresh apricot and floral notes meld with preserved orange peel and clove spice notes on the palate. The wine is delicate, nuanced and refreshing on the palate. Crisp, finely textured acidity extends the finish.
2019 has proven to be an excellent year. The modestly wet winter led to an unusual spring with six inches of rain falling in late May. The extra water caused particularly strong vine canopy growth necessitating extra leaf pulling to improve air flow and suppress diseases. No significant problems persisted as the vines moved into a delightful summer, with nicely warm days tempered by cool afternoon winds from the Pacific. Crop levels were average, with most sites needing very little thinning to achieve optimum balance. Harvest weather was particularly pleasant, with the fruit ripening evenly, and critically, not too quickly. The 2019 wines are showing great purity and richness along with fresh fruit flavors and clearly defined vineyard characters.
With its beautiful old vines nestled on a rolling northwest-facing hillside, Kent Ritchie Vineyard has established a reputation as one of the Russian River Valley’s finest winegrowing sites. Originally planted in 1972, Kent Ritchie Vineyard features classic sandy Goldridge soils on a sloping benchland that lead to the Russian River. The grapes from this wine come from our block of Wente clone Chardonnay at the crest of one of highest hills.
