Boysenberry, tar and Asian spice make this an exotic expression of Pinot Noir. The tannins have a muscular, sinewy texture which balance well with the dark fruit. The clean, crisp finish speaks to the high-altitude vineyard where these grapes are farmed.
2021 will be remembered as a challenging year, with record low rainfall producing smaller vine growth and very low yields of very small berries. 2021 is also a remarkably fine vintage with many wines performing near their best in quality. The young 2021 wines are showing great promise as intensely concentrated, complex wines, sure to give pleasurable drinking for years to come.
Defined by its high elevation and low vigor uplifted marine soils, Alder Springs Vineyard sustains tiny vines with equally tiny clusters and berries. Located about 11 miles from the Pacific, with some blocks as high as 2,600 ft., Alder Springs exists on the edge of what is possible for cool-climate winegrowing. When we bottle an Alder Springs Vineyard wine, it is something rare and special. This wine comes from one of the vineyard’s finest Pinot Noir blocks in 2021: Helms Field made up of Dijon Clones, California Heirloom selections and Selection Massale selections made by Stu Bewley from his extensive nursery of mother vines.
