Blackberry fruit with a tar-like, savory component give preview to this wine’s great depth. Stout, firmly structured tannins marry with a fruity heft to the mid-palate. The finish is broad and coating, with a high level of volume; it lasts for over thirty seconds. It is no wonder that enthusiasts of Napa reds sometimes gravitate to the Gap’s Crown Pinot Noir. (And no wonder we hold this one back for an extra year compared to the rest of our Pinot Noirs!)
The 2022 vintage in Sonoma was remarkable, marked by a series of climatic challenges and triumphs. Below-average rainfall during the winter months was mitigated by the heavy rains in March and April. A sustained heatwavein August accelerated ripeness, leading to a compressed harvest. The 2022 wines are shaping up to be exceptional, with delightful fruit profiles, acid structures, and concentration. It’s a vintage that captures the essence of Sonoma’s terroir, promising wines that are vibrant, complex, and true to their vineyard origins.
Gap’s Crown was first planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2002. Located high on a rock strewn, windswept hill directly overlooking the Petaluma Gap, the coastal mountain feature that feeds the cool Pacific air into the Russian River basin. Our section is planted exclusively to Dijon 667, in the site's most rocky and austere soils. Gap’s Crown is one of the last vineyards we harvest each vintage.
