Planted to a unique volcanic soil on the northern end of the Russian River Valley, the 2023 expression delivers a floral aroma with filagree texture, quintessential to Kent Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay. The baking spice from light use of new French Oak melds with the apple and pear notes, creating a refreshing, highly quaffable palate. There is a floral, delicate thread that runs through the wine encouraging another rewarding sip.
The 2023 vintage in Sonoma began with replenishing rains during the winter and spring months. This was a welcome event for growers since the previous three years saw varying degrees of drought. Spring followed with a staggered budbreak and flowering, then a cool June. Warm summer days followed and sized up the berries, but cool weather returned in September, with average highs not exceeding 80 degrees F. This delayed harvest by 3-4 weeks. The tension was high with the impending risk of late season botrytis. However, the weather held, and the resulting crop delivered the poise expected from a gradual, cool vintage.
Originally planted in 1972, Kent Ritchie Vineyard features classic sandy Goldridge soils on a sloping benchland that leadto the Russian River. The grapes from this wine come from our block of Wente clone Chardonnay at the crest of one of highest hills.
