The 2023 delivers high tone red cherry – turned up to eleven! Aromas of sweet tea, cranberry, mint and fresh cut hay accompany this electric appeal and lend complexity. The palate offers a taut and refreshing acidity that is juicy and flowing. The medium body extends to a long supple finish. Athletic and light on its feet, this inaugural vintage is drinking great now but will develop further nuance and complexity with age.
The 2023 vintage in Sonoma began with replenishing rains during the winter and spring months. This was a welcome event for growers since the previous three years saw varying degrees of drought. Spring followed with a staggered budbreak and flowering, then a cool June. Warm summer days followed and sized up the berries, but cool weather returned in September, with average highs not exceeding 80 degrees F. This delayed harvest by 3-4 weeks. The tension was high with the impending risk of late season botrytis. However, the weather held, and the resulting crop delivered the poise expected from a gradual, cool vintage.
This exquisitely positioned fourteen-acre vineyard sits on the crown of a hill on Green Valley Road, just north of Sebastopol, in the heart of Russian River Valley. James Hall planted this vineyard in 2019 and selected the clones and row direction exclusively for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This inaugural Pinot Noir is from our favorite blocks of Calera and 115 Clone.
