2020 Two Dryers Vineyard Pinot Noir
With its aromas of bright cherry, tarragon and lavender, there is a lovely fetching quality to this wine. On the palate, inviting fruit mingles with more savory notes to reveal flavors of Kirsch, cola, licorice, fennel, sea spray and complex spice. This is a classic expression of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, with a supple mouthfeel, soft fruity tannins that turn elegant and refreshing on the finish, and complex notes of cool marine air and spice.
The year began with a very dry winter, leaving some vineyards with reduced water for the growing season. This translated into smaller berries, adding extra intensity to the aromas and flavors. The harvest at Patz & Hall wrapped up in late September, making it the earliest end of picking in my 30+ years of winemaking. Though 2020 produced record small yields, the quality was remarkable, with most vineyards producing wines of depth, intensity, and dramatic concentration. The Chardonnays are showing intricate aromatics and deep flavors while the Pinot Noirs show very dark and concentrated flavors with developed tannins. Overall, I’m very pleased with the strength and vitality of the 2020 wines and believe they have a long life ahead in the cellar.
Located west of Sebastopol on the Bodega Highway, Two Dryers Vineyard was planted exclusively for Patz & Hall by rising star vineyard manager and viticulturist Mark Sanchietti. This exquisite 12-acre property features some of the finest Goldridge sandy loam soils that we have ever seen. It is planted on an east-facing slope that ensures lovely morning sunshine. Though the site includes clones 115, 459, 667 and 828, this wine was made exclusively from clone 667 Pinot Noir. The result is an elegant and refreshing Pinot Noir with alluring red fruit notes.
